how-to

usually copy cut and paste are on a toolbar built-into the application, as well as tied to CUA keyboard shortcuts listed below.

it's built into nearly every application, it's part of windows or mac osx.

mac keys are somewhat different because the keyboard is different. but on windows and linux those two are the same.

  • Copy: ctrl-c or ctrl-insert
  • Cut: ctrl-x or shift-delete
  • Paste: ctrl-v or shift-insert

select/highlight by holding down a shift key and using any of the direction keys (arrows, pgup, pgdn, home, end, ctrl-home, ctrl-pgup, ctrl-pgdn, ctrl-end, it's OK to do ctrl-shift instead of shift-ctrl if you want, order doesn't matter if you want to hold both down) to move and this will select, let go of the shift key, and do copy or cut. then click somewhere or move the cursor using cursor keys and do paste. you can also left-click on text, drag with the mouse, and highlight them.

selecting files in My Computer is slightly different. you can copy and paste, delete, drag into another folder, double click to open (watch it if you have a range selected!) and do other operations. this works for select boxes on the web also:

  • you can click a file to select 1 file.
  • to select a range of files, click on 1 file, shift-left-click on the last file.
  • to select individual files in a set but not the entire range, (this is tricky, and it's possible you may end up running/executing/opening the entire set of files), you can range-select first if you want, and then ctrl-left-click on the individual files you want, but you can't range-select afterwards.
