out of memory, dialogs not showing completely

THE PROBLEM

  • you need more RAM. I suggest maxing your memory out. for 32-bit OS, max is 4GB. extremely high limit on 64-bit OS (don't worry about it, just stuff it if you can afford it). your existing RAM is probably very small sticks, so I suggest you replace all of your memory with the same type (unless you know what you are doing and you know the specs on the memory you have and you know your motherboard). this will eliminate the possibility of getting different timings (CL2, CL3) of memory mixed together in the same system, which is something you don't want - different vendors sell different timings of memory, sometimes both.
  • you have a process which is eating huge amounts of memory such as spyware. try [windows-logo-flag-key]-R mrt Enter
  • If you can't afford more RAM, increase your virtual memory and use a custom pagefile.

you have spyware or a process eating huge amounts of memory

do a ctrl-alt-delete and bring up the task manager, click the processes tab, and click on the "Mem Usage" title twice (this will sort by that, first in ascending order, then in descending order). scroll to the top of the list. the names of the executables listed at the top are probably the culprits.

At the top of mine, are:

Firefox: 276MB (keeper)
Adobe Media Player: 135MB (keeper)
McShield: 68MB (keeper, mcafee)
YahooMessenger: 51MB (keeper)
explorer: 40MB (this is a keeper!)

Increase your Virtual Memory

XP

start, right-click on my computer, properties, advanced tab, performance, settings, advanced tab, virtual memory, change, custom size, 4096MB, 4096MB, set, OK click OK on all the rest of the dialogs until they are all gone.
then reboot.

If you have 64-bit XP, you can increase your virtual memory beyond 4096. (double it or more, try 24GB if you have the space).
