Thread Locker
have a nut that's always coming loose from a bolt, or want to make sure a nut is not going to come off? try this stuff. I have had some bad experience with FACER Z-42 - it stays a liquid. the stuff's supposed to harden sort of like a colored glassy version of loc-tite or super-glue, but it has different properties than super-glue: it's not as crumbly when it dries.
0.2oz/2.0oz MG Chemicals thread locker (low strength), available from mouser $9/$30
0.2oz/2.0oz MG Chemicals thread locker (med strength), available from mouser $9/$30
0.2oz/2.0oz MG Chemicals thread locker (high strength, wicking and permanent), available from mouser $9/$30
Static Shielding Bags
If you have PCI cards or similar cards or computer parts that you stick in a computer that are just sitting around, you might want to invest in a set of these to protect your investment from static damage. Just because you can't see or feel the static doesn't mean you aren't generating it. a tie generates about 300V. static you can feel is about 18,000V. a grounding strap is also a good investment (you can pick those up at Radio Shack). You buy these static shielding bags in bulk (25 or 100), and they are very inexpensive. you fold the end over and seal them with tape and that makes a Faraday Cage which shields it from static. avoid touching the card edge connector. always make sure you hold the board by the bracket. If you have an ATX motherboard, there isn't an off-the-shelf bag available in the size you want.
3M silver static shielding bags, 6"x10", metal-in available from digi-key $5.31/25
this is the right size for most PCI/PCIe cards. Just make sure that the card doesn't have a battery on it, because it will short the battery out. note the labelling "metal-in". I haven't seen any cards lately that have a battery.
3M silver static shielding bags, 8"x10", metal-in available from digi-key $6.55/25
this may be the right size for thicker, longer video cards, but measure yours to see if this fits first, and give it at least 1.5" wiggle room on each side!. Just make sure that the card doesn't have a battery on it, because it will short the battery out. note the labelling "metal-in". I haven't seen any cards lately that have a battery.
3M 8x12 static shielding bag, metal-in, available from digikey $7.18/25
this is for the big cards. just make sure that the card don't have a battery on it, because it will short the battery out. note the labelling "metal-in". big cards like video cards will not have this problem.
Grounding Straps
this is a static prevention measure that connects between your wrist and the computer. you hook up before you pick up a board. you want the kind that has a resistor in it, so it doesn't cause shock when you pick up an object or connect to an object with a different voltage potential. walking across some carpets generate lots of static, some don't. and then there's coats and other synthetic clothes like polyester which generate a lot of static. anyway, slip the alligator clip onto the banana jack, clip the alligator clip onto the bare metal part of the case of the computer where it won't slip off. then put the wrist part on tightly enouch where you think it will get a good connection (we're not out to cut off circulation). There's conductive cloth bands, metal spiedel bands (like you would use on a watch), and cheap throwaway conductive straps.

DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL OR COTTON SWABS ON TAPE/DISK HEADS! it leaves a white film and goo behind. use foam tipped swabs.

Foam-tipped Swabs
the swab of coice for tape & floppy disk heads. Although, it is preferable with disk heads that you use a cleaning disk. If it is clogged with dust. get the dust out first, even if it means opening up the drive case - it's usually not that hard. try to not let the heads slam against each other hard if you can avoid it.
