be sure they are the file extensions that are important to YOU. you can also send drive back to the drive manufacturer for data recovery, so ask them about this and look at their web site and dig around for that service if they have it. major drive manufaturers are:

 

if the hard drive

  • has been dropped
  • is screetching
  • blinking steadily
  • the hard drive light stays on steadily and doesn't turn off if it has one (especially applies to external drives)
  • the hard drive light stays off no matter what you do if it has one (especially applies to external drives)

then don't power up the drive anymore. let the clean room handle it before any more possible damage is done to the data. if the head has crashed, you don't want it moving around scraping data off the platters.
