ones with EMI/RFI (noise) filtering are a nice feature to have, especially if you have A/V equipment. more joules means it handles bigger power spikes, which is better for your equipment in case of lightning. Tipp Lite's ISOBAR has been a trusted name for a long time for that, and it has good noise filtering too. if you need to plug in wall adapters, try these inexpensive 14" power extension cords and the version with an extender.
Even a high joules rating will not protect you from power ups and downs from the power company during a wind storm, so unplug your power strip from the wall or turn it off during any kind of storm just to be safe. I've seen customer's computers fried because of the power going on and off during wind storms or power outages. that sends with it huge power spikes. so does lightning. Try to at least look for something with a minimum of 1800 joules. The more joules, the bigger an electrical storm or a blown electric company transformer or downed power lines it can handle. Any of those things can send spikes down the line.
