Overview
If you are purchasing value line taiyo yuden or bulk media that is shrink-wrapped, it will come without a cake box.
this is part of the cost savings.
purchase a cake box if you do not already have one. these are shorter than (if you use spacers) or just barely fit than the stack of taiyo yuden discs.
the shrink wrapped and value line media also ships MUCH MORE SAFELY (less chance of breakage)!
gold is archival 300-year media. silver is archival 100-year media. taiyo yuden are standard AZO cyanine 30-year media. normal cdr media only lasts 5 years I read somewhere, normal DVD's for 30 years, floppies for 3-5 years. silver is good for archiving family photos. check out the FAQ. Green-dye cdr's last 30-100 years but are sensitive to light like the sun (shortens lifespan, so could be 5 years with use). DVD+R/DVD-R difference: DVD-R is promoted by Pioneer, and is the default drive in software/video copying and distribution. DVD+R is promoted by Sony and Phillips and is focused more on the home recorder/enduser market. As the market moves forward the formats are becoming more compatible.
Available in watershed, silver-lacquer, white inkjet hub-printable, white thermal for rimage everest, silver inkjet, white inkjet. shrink wrap also available, which ships great. shrink wrap means it has no spindle - you supply your own. you can get it with or without spindle. this media will last 30 years on the shelf (recent durability projection testing). professional quality media - works with any burner. As with Any generic CDR media, it will probably not last 5 years in sunlight. Taiyo Yuden works in any device and with any burner.

long-term Archive Discs
MAM-A gold/silver: gold predicted to last 250 years, silver predicted to last 100 years (blue dye I think). gold can sometimes be hard to write, so always verify. the gold media is heavy! great for archiving your photos and home videos as a "master". MDISCs are made with the equivalent of rock and are supposed to last for 1,000 years or more. a blu-ray MDISC will be coming out Spring 2013 which is compatible with blu-ray combo drives. however, there might be a problem with shredding an MDISC because of the rock content. MDISC DVDs currently require special drives that have the MDISC label/compatibility. as with any archival media, it will only last until its end of livespan or until the time when the elements melt with fervent heat, whichever comes first.

Lightscribe Media
this media to burn a label you must have a lightscribe (or similarly named) drive. after burning the disc, you use Nero or Roxio or Sonic or Toast (maybe?) to design and burn a black and white label into the media. no dangerous sticky labels needed.
