Introduction

This is a collection of windows and mac tools on .ISO cd/dvd image files you can burn to cd/dvd media. "700MB/80min." cd's are actually measured in terms of MiB and can hold up to 737MB. Older cd-rom drives (see if they still work, they have a lower MTBF) only recognize "650MB/74min." (681MB) cdroms and will not work with today's off-the-shelf cdr's. To get 650MB cdr's you must buy gold media, either Mitsui MAM-A gold cdr, or Taiyo Yuden gold cdr (which are less expensive! and don't last 300 years).

download size bugs

There is a download size bug in Internet Explorer 7 and some servers. Firefox download manager supposedly has been able to do large (>2GiB) files since 1.x. I did run across some versions of FF (even [older versions of] 3.0) that cannot download files bigger than 2GiB - truncates the file, but I am using 3.5 now and this is no longer a problem. since FF 3.0.8 I have not had problems. IE7 cannot download files bigger than 4GiB - IE will not even try - you will get "http header error" when you click the link or try to save link as. IE8 doesn't have this problem.

seems interesting that they all got fixed at once after upgrading to IE8 and some updates to FF3.

I will warn you that if you are applying XP SP3 and you have something less than IE8 that it will try to install IE8 in a broken way and will not be fixed unless you reinstall the OS. before you install SP3, install IE8.

why cd-sized ISOs for some of these?

My reasoning for offering a lot of these as CD ISOs rather than DVDs is because the systems that these run on may still have CD-ROM drives in them. Soon those cd-rom drives will have to be replaced with DVD drives as that is the lowest "new" thing that you can get these days (preferably burners).

7/19/2010. Gave GIMP massive package a wraparound installer, which I also intend to use in my OpenOffice.org Productivity Suite. GIMP gives lots of errors on startup, but once it gets going, it has massive plugins. plus, you can add your favorite Adobe Photoshop plugins too.

3/11/2010. I recompiled all the programs on disc 3 of the utilities, it is now full, and now there is a disc 5, so the set is entirely reorganized except for disc 1. The windows 3.1 disc had the utils3 disc stuff removed from it, since you can get them on utils disc 3. The dos utilities which are the only things these days that might work in windows 3.1 are in the "dos" directories somewhere in the file tree of each program. I have not tested the DPMI'd 386 DOS programs on a windows 3.1 system, though I have one available to test with. If you want a Course Management System (Virtual Learning Environment), I suggest you try out Moodle server. it is based on apache+php+mysql (apache friends' XAMPP) and I have it as an install package (which normally it's not) on my OpenOffice.org office suite, and so is peer collaboration software and a host of other applications.

10/2009. In order to conserve web space (I reached my max many times recently), I separated the packages into a generic set of 4 or so windows utilities download cd's and leave the OS-specific stuff on small individual cd's or dvd's, whichever is appropriate. This eliminates a lot of needless duplication and makes the downloads a little more clear as to what they are.

I updated one or two programs like Filezilla, 7-zip, and added XAMPP complete development web server package. This also means I brought back the NT4 tools (it was popular enough for me to hope to bring it back someday).

Downloads

Right-click on the links and pick save target as/save link as. this way, you won't cause your cd burner software to try to automatically burn the temporary file you downloaded. this way, you have it in a place where you know where it's at, and the file won't disappear on you when you need it.

Recommendations

I suggest that of the .Net isos you only go with 2of2, because it contains the latest comprehensive .Net framework package (2.0 & 3.5SP1). 2.0 is for win9x/me/2000 machines and 3.5SP1 is for xp/2003/2008/vista/7. Note that 4.0 is in beta.

Of the rest of the packages, the win2k and winnt and winxp and vista packages only differ in IE7, vista upgrade advisor [on vista ISOs], office service packs, OS service packs (XP only goes up to service pack 2 because SP3 is only available as an ISO and it makes no sense to put an ISO on an ISO), updates.

ME and 9x packages only differ by boot disks, DUN (dialup networking), nslookup2000.

win31 is unique in itself. includes IE5.01 browser and I think DUN. I took it offline in favor of more popular operating systems (and I am crunched for space).

Windows

NEWS: I just made the media-encoders cd, and 2003 and 2008 Server cd's, and on the XP and Vista cd's I included IE8. On the NT-family systems (2000/XP/Vista/2003/2008) which are susceptible to the conficker/downadup worm, I have included in the cd's av-anti-spyware/conficker prevention directory (xp#4,2k#4,vista#2,2003#1,2008#1) the appropriate MS patches from MS security bulletin MS08-067, since for an infected machine, MS' and Live web site cannot be accessed and neither can updates for your AV package - worm blocks the domains. I have also included a cleaner - it's the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - you run it and it removes the worm one-time I think. HOW to tell if you have conficker: I think "Open Folder" appears in the list of available applications to run when you insert new media, such as a blank cd or a removeable whatever. that once item was inserted by the worm.

.Net

.Net 1.1 may be the only .Net that works on NT and Win98.
I don't know. you may be able to use .Net 2.0 on 98/ME.
max 2.0 on 2000.
don't expect to use 3.0 or 3.5 on ME or 98 or 2000 (that means no Visual Studio 2008). I was wrong in my earlier statements about .Net - .Net versions are comprehensive - putting 2.0 means you have 1.1 on. If you want 3.5, that should be enough. some applpications will require 1.1 for some reason. I have an odd system that requires 2.0 to be installed at the same time as 3.5 due to a dependency of a piece of software that installed 2.0.

Macintosh

A MacOSX tools ISO is here, but I have only these tools, and only a very few are open source (testdisk and photorec from cgsecurity.org)! please suggest some tools for the mac cd .

Gave GIMP massive package a wraparound installer, which I also intend to use in my OpenOffice.org Productivity Suite. GIMP gives lots of errors on startup, but once it gets going, it has massive plugins. plus, you can add your favorite Adobe Photoshop plugins too.
